A few weeks ago, I undertook an International travel. I was mainly on the road most of the time. And being connected to the Internet became a challenge. I was feeling as if something is amiss from the daily schedule since I could not access my information, email, news, financial data etc. One may be tempted to think that this is a limited experience in probably few cases. But I would disagree. In another instance, have faced similar situation in one of the richest and advanced parts of the planets as well, when I desperately needed to access my work email while I was out of office, but despite moving from hotspot to hotspot, could not access the Internet for a whole day. Because of poor connectivity/signals or restricted access. What a shame.
The problem is this. We have all the advanced smart phones, wireless devices, hi-tech laptops etc but they all become plastic weight in absence of a reliable network. The hardware infrastructure of the Internet has just not kept pace with the software portion of the web. Some how we are still dependent on the monopoly of afew network providers who have not shown interest in upgrading or overhauling their infrastructure to be available to all.
Internet has to be like air and water. Always available. Always on. With the advent of wireless and Satellite communication technologies, its not so difficult. But the service providers are yet to realize the importance of bringing their services available without interruption, anywhere. This is a one time investment which generates revenue over and over. This is very important for the wholistic, overall development and acceptance of Internet (ie the network part) and the web (ie the software part) as the most free, most open, most available medium of information for our generation and those to come.
