These days, everyone is on the web. Well almost all of our generation.
And those who are on the web, want to remain in touch with their friends and family--there you go the 'social-networking'.
While there are tons of social media sites that allow you to post your status and comments and even chat live, there is this category of social media that allows you to transfer live video and audio over the web. A prominent player in this domain is Skype.
In this post, I talk about Skype, a tool to do voice over IP (voip) calls and how to install it on Ubuntu 10.
While there are a lot of usergroups and blogposts that seem to indicate installing Skype from the command line is the way to go, I think its better and easier to do it via the GUI Package managers on Ubuntu.
There are more than one way of getting to the GUI package managers. In my case I accomplished the install of Skype on my Asus Bamboo laptop running Ubuntu 10 as follows:
1-Applications > Ubuntu Software Center
2-In the Subsequent screen, look for the "search bar" on the top right
3-Type in "Skype". This shows the "Install" button. Click Install.
4-Ubuntu will automatically download and install Skype on your machine. So simple.
5-To start using Skype, browse to 'Applications' > Internet > Skype.
Note: To ensure, you are all set with your speaker and microphone capabilities on Skype, you can perform a 'Skype Test Call' from the Skype buddy list. Other settings like audio-video config, call preferences can be changed from the 'Options' menu on bottom left of skype console.
Enjoy!!
