The $35 Tablet from India, that was showcased by Govt of India in Jul this year, is an awesome news on several counts. First, it is coming from a developing country. Its target segment being the students in its schools and rural areas. Now that is lofty but very impressive. India is the home to the largest pool of young people. Its median age is around 25-30 years of age. Compare that to the West where the average age is much higher at 40 to 50 years. Younger population means more workers. More Educated workers means definite productivity and faster growth.Combine this with the huge population, then it is great news for India. They certainly took a very commendable good first step in the right direction.
The 2nd thing is this tablet is not the watered down OLPC. It has a touch screen, 2GB of memory, a faster processor and wireless. This is especially useful in a country where fixed line connections have very little penetration compared to the wireless. India is one of the biggest cellular markets in the world with the lowest tariffs. No wonder that one fourth of their billion people have access to wireless phones that opens a lot of opportunities for a wireless enabled tablet.
The other big thing is this product is that is based on the Android platform which in turn is Linux based. So if this product picks up, it is a definite win for the people and so also for the Open source community. It is rumored to be released in early 2011. And there is a talk that the price may be further subsidized to less than 20 dollars. Well, a good promising start, need to wait and watch how the product is received by the users. Hoping for the best.
